Oxford University: 1483
Think dorm life is bad now?? You wouldn't have been down with Oxford, either.
No loud music? No swearing? Grace before AND after meals -- and no unsheathed knives at the table? Welcome to college, kids. Translated from the original Latin, here's just a sampling of the rules for life at Oxford in the late 15th century.
As students of this eminent institution of higher learning you are privileged to be here as this University starts its 400th year. With that privilege comes responsibility. Each and every student is obligated to follow the regulations of these halls. They shall be enorced by a student elected each week by his peers. Men, be forewarned: Any of you found guilty of violating these rules will be fined a quadrant, (or farthing), unless otherwise noted. Those who fail to pay their fines, which go to the benefit of this university community, will be expelled by the authority of the Principal.
Therefore, it is decreed by the Principal of Halls that:
- Every student must attend Mass daily and must, at day's end, join in the cummunity singing of Salve Regina, the "Antiphon of the Blessed Virgin"
- No student may swear or use instruments of swearing or oath-taking.
- Grace must be said before and after meals. No one may leave the table until after second grace.
- There will be no joking or laughter during grace.
- There is to be no throwing of the spear, sword, or shield or any other games that disturb the peace. The penalty is four quadrants.
- No student may engage in games of chance.
- No student may tell dirty stories or use debased words that corrupt the morals of his companions.
- No student may walk about a village or field without a companion so that he be kept secure, morally honest, and wholesome in his doctrine.
- Loud music, both with instruments and with singing, as well as throwing the voice is prohibited.
- No student shall have a male friend spend the night in his room without permission of the Principal. The penalty is four quadrants.
- No student may generate strife in the halls by word, deed, advice, or gesture. Odious comparisons of a country to a country or a faculty to a faculty are strictly forbidden.
- No student may carry arms unless he is about to go far away or has just come from far away.
- There shall be no unsheathed knives at the dining table.
- No student may feed himself evil doctrine or associate with someone of evil doctrine. Associations with vagabonds, thieves, fornicators, boxers, and disseminators of discord are also forbidden.
- Students may not take extra food from the table in their napkins.
- No student may speak in any language other than Latin, except on Feast Days, unless that person is illiterate or of foreign birth.
- No student may be outside the halls past 8 P.M. in the winter, and 9 P.M. in the summer.
- No student may disrupt the halls by brawling, turning over benches or beds or running on the roof.
- Students are prohibited from defacing the map by pouring liquid on it or ripping it.
- There is to be no running over the garden grass or carrying off of flowers.
- Any student who abuses a countryman, colleague, boatman or common servant to the point of blood being spilled will be fined six shillings and eight quadrants. Repeat offenders will be expelled.
