THE SECOND MILLENIA
AD 1000 -- AD 2000

My Little Genghis

A Mother brags on her strapping young tyrant.

Editor's Note:  Imagine historians' delight to find this late 12th-century letter from Houlun, the mother of Genghis Khan, to her sister. Houlun calls her son by his birth name, Temujin.

Dear Soula,

I realize it's been years since I wrote, in fact I think it was after that nasty incident when Temujin killed his half-brother Bekter for stealing the tribe's fish -- was he nine then, or ten?? Oh, well..bygone days..

You've surely heard he's now leading the Yakka Mongol tribe. Has been for five years, ever since his father the chieftain was poisoned. Temujin's doing a fine job, and even shows signs of being a stronger leader than Yesukai. Still, I admit to losing Yesukai, even after all this time. He was a good provider and kept our yurt filled with warmth.

The news I want to tell you with this communication is that Temujin got married. Last year, at 17, he married 13 year-old Bourtai, of the Olkunut tribe. The ceremony was very worthy. She wore a coat of white felt, white boots, gold coins in her hair and a pine cone on top. Naturally, she carried a sheep, the symbol of plenty, and she just looked lovely. During the wedding chase, Bourtai pretended to ride away, and Temujin caught her (of course) and brought her back on his horse. You can tell they're in love, though I suspect Temujin will marry several times again for convenience and alliances with other tribes.

The wedding made me think of how Yesukai stole me from my betrothed husband, lo these many years ago, and carried me off to be his wife. Just took me away from my tribe during my own wedding ride. I was completely beside myself and did some serious wailing -- well, you can imagine. But I decided to make the best of circumstances. We women have to adjust, after all.

All the other kids are fine, and the boys are all supporting Temujin now, in anticipation of him one day being named Khan. We all see it's inevitable -- he just has a mantle of leadership that can't be denied.

Relay my regards to your family

Your Sister,

Houlun
